Discover the remarkable story behind Casa d’Italo and the visionary who brought it to life.
Casa d’Italo is not just a place to stay; it’s a testament to the life and legacy of Italo Martinengo. Born on June 1, 1941, in Rapallo, Italy, Italo’s journey to South Africa with his family after World War II marked the beginning of a life filled with adventure, ingenuity, and a deep connection to nature. Educated at Marist Brothers in Johannesburg, he became a skilled electrical engineer and a man of many talents—builder, plumber, inventor, deep-sea diver, motor mechanic, and adventurer.
Italo’s passion for diving led him to co-create a diving system, which he used to salvage the Birkenhead wreck in Cape Town. During these dives, he fell in love with the Walker Bay area and purchased a farm in 1984, where he relocated his family in 1987. With no existing dwelling on the property, Italo built what is now known as Casa d’Italo, reflecting his resourcefulness and dedication.
A staunch advocate for nature conservation, Italo was a founding member of The Walker Bay Nature Conservancy. Though he suffered a severe stroke in 2017 and passed away on May 1, 2019, his legacy endures. Casa d’Italo has been lovingly converted and opened in his memory by his wife, children, and grandchildren, ensuring that his spirit of adventure and conservation lives on for all to experience.
At Casa d’Italo, the heart and soul of our hospitality stem from the rich heritage of the Martinengo-Burger family. The story of Casa d’Italo began with Italo Martinengo, a man of many talents and a deep love for nature and adventure. His vision laid the foundation for what Casa d’Italo is today—a blend of South African charm and Italian warmth nestled in the serene village of Stanford.
Silvana Martinengo, with her innate sense of elegance and hospitality, continued Italo’s legacy, ensuring that Casa d’Italo remained a place of comfort and luxury. Her husband, Eddie Burger, renowned for his vision and dedication, brought to life the dream of a place where the beauty of the Overberg District meets the allure of Italian culture.
Their sons, Clayden and Dylan Burger, now carry forward this legacy with unwavering dedication. Together, they form the pillars of the trust that owns and nurtures The Estate, ensuring that every guest who walks through our doors experiences the perfect harmony of past traditions and modern comforts.
The Estate itself is a testament to the family’s vision—a sanctuary where every detail reflects their love for natural beauty, exquisite design, and heartfelt hospitality. From the lush surroundings to the meticulously curated interiors, every aspect of Casa d’Italo echoes the Martinengo-Burger family’s commitment to creating an enchanting escape for all who visit.
